Balder the Brave #1 opens a four-issue limited series written and covered by Walt Simonson, with interior pencils and inks by Sal Buscema, colors by Paul Becton, and lettering by John Workman Jr. The story, "The Sword of Frey," pulls Balder away from Karnilla to stand with Thor against the forces of Hel, feeding directly back into Thor #360-362 during the most celebrated stretch of Simonson's Asgardian run. Released in November 1985 at a 75-cent cover price, the series functions as an extension of that run rather than a standalone launch, and it remains the character's only solo title of the period.

Market behavior matches its status as a Copper Age supporting-cast spin-off: print runs were healthy, high-grade copies survived in quantity, and the certified population is small only because few owners see reason to submit. Demand is driven almost entirely by two collector groups — completists assembling the full Simonson Thor era including tie-ins, and Asgardian-character specialists who want Balder, Karnilla, and Hela appearances. Certified copies at the top of the grade scale command a premium that is disproportionate to the raw book, which is the usual pattern for cheap Copper Age material where grading costs exceed the underlying value.

Raw copies trade as inexpensive back-issue stock, frequently as part of a complete four-issue set rather than singly, and low-grade examples have little independent market. The realistic upside sits in strong-corner, tight-spine examples suitable for submission, and in signed or otherwise notated copies tied to Simonson appearances. Dealers should treat this as an accessible run-filler with a modest certified ceiling: steady, well-understood, and unlikely to move sharply absent renewed screen attention to Balder or a broader run on Simonson-era Thor material.
