Avengers Spotlight #27, cover-dated December 1989, continues the Hawkeye-centered format the title inherited from Solo Avengers and folds it into Acts of Vengeance, the company-wide crossover in which Loki manipulates Marvel's villains into attacking heroes outside their usual rotation. The lead story, "Hurting Inside," is scripted by Howard Mackie with pencils by Al Milgrom and inks by Don Heck: Boomerang, primed for another run at Iron Man, is redirected toward Hawkeye by a mysterious benefactor, with Mockingbird in support. The backup, "Some Assembly Required," is written by Dwayne McDuffie with art by Dwayne Turner and Chris Ivy, putting Stingray and the reserve Avengers up against the Awesome Android at the submerged Hydro-Base headquarters. The cover is by June Brigman and Roy Richardson. It is a competent, well-credited chapter of a large crossover rather than a book carrying a first appearance, origin, or death.

Market behavior follows that assessment. The issue was printed in the high-distribution, high-survival environment of late-1989 Marvel, and direct-edition copies remain plentiful in dealer stock and in bulk lots, so raw copies trade as inventory rather than as individual sales events. Demand comes from two narrow but persistent groups: readers assembling the complete Acts of Vengeance crossover in original issues, and Hawkeye collectors working the Solo Avengers / Avengers Spotlight run end to end. Neither group pays a premium for mid-grade material, since near-mint raw copies are still easy to source at cover-adjacent money. Certified copies are scarce on the census only because almost nobody submits the book, and that scarcity does not translate into scarcity-driven pricing; a slab here is priced off grading and handling costs plus a thin premium for the convenience of a guaranteed top-grade copy.

The practical collecting picture is straightforward: low-grade copies are reading material, mid-grade copies fill run gaps and sell best inside crossover or title lots, and only the top of the grade scale supports a slab at all. Buyers seeking exposure to this era of the title are better served by the recognized keys in the run, particularly the US Agent material, while this issue's appeal rests on its place in the crossover and on the backup's early Marvel work from Dwayne McDuffie and Dwayne Turner, a credit that has drawn steadier collector attention over the past decade. For dealers, the book is a dependable run-filler with modest upside, and the sensible strategy is volume at the raw level and selective certification only for copies that plausibly grade at the very top.
