Avengers Spotlight #26 (cover-dated December 1989) opens the Acts of Vengeance crossover, Marvel's line-wide 1989-90 event in which Loki assembles the Marvel Universe's heaviest villains and redirects them against unfamiliar heroes. The issue functions as the prologue: a hooded stranger frees the Wizard inside the Vault, the Wizard empties the cell block, and Iron Man and Hawkeye arrive separately to contain a full-scale super-criminal breakout, clashing with each other before cooperating. Dwayne McDuffie scripted, several years before he co-founded Milestone Media, with pencils by Dwayne Turner, inks by Chris Ivy, and a Keith Pollard cover. The supporting cast is deep for a two-part story of this length, including Orka, the Scarecrow, Mr. Hyde, and Warden Howard G. Hardman, and the plot threads carry forward into Avengers Spotlight #29 and the wider crossover.

Market depth here is shallow. The book was distributed in ordinary late-copper-age quantities in both direct and newsstand form, survives in quantity, and has almost no certified footprint, so there is no reliable graded price ladder to interpolate against. Demand comes from three narrow directions: readers assembling the complete Acts of Vengeance crossover, Hawkeye collectors working the Solo Avengers/Avengers Spotlight run, and McDuffie completists, a constituency that has grown since renewed attention to his Milestone work but has not so far bid up his early Marvel credits. In raw grades the issue trades as inexpensive back-issue stock rather than as a collectible with its own price discovery, and low-grade copies are effectively reader material.

The realistic buyer profile is a run collector or crossover completist rather than an investor, and the practical consequence is that the raw brackets compress almost to a single point — the difference between a beaten copy and a solid mid-grade copy is measured in a couple of dollars, and grading costs exceed the value of anything below high grade. Where the book can surprise is at the top of the scale: with so few copies certified, a genuine 9.8 is scarce on the open market and, when one surfaces, it competes for the small pool of buyers who want the Acts of Vengeance opening chapter in census-grade condition. Dealers should treat this as inventory to be sold in the raw, and reserve slabbing for pack-fresh direct-edition copies with square spines and clean white cover stock; the McDuffie credit is the most likely long-term source of upward pressure.
