Cover shows strong gloss and sharp corners with no visible creases or spine stress; the book is stored in a protective sleeve. Minor edge wear cannot be fully ruled out due to glare from the plastic sleeve, and the interior and back cover were not assessed. No color breaks, stains, or tears are visible on the front cover.

Defenders vol. 2 #5 (May 2001) comes from the short-lived Marvel relaunch built by Kurt Busiek and Erik Larsen, with Larsen on cover and pencils, Sal Buscema inking, Gregory Wright coloring, and Chris Eliopoulos lettering. The series returned the non-team to its 1970s footing — Doctor Strange, the Hulk, and Hellcat working in uneasy alliance — and drew its antagonists from the same deep bench, here the Headmen in the persons of Arthur Nagan, Chondu, and Jerry Morgan, alongside Attuma and the Bi-Beast. Doc Samson and Alicia Masters round out a cast that rewards familiarity with Steve Gerber's original run, and Buscema's inks over Larsen give the issue a deliberate continuity of look with the Bronze Age material it references.
Market profile is that of an ordinary modern-age mid-run issue. The 2001 Defenders shipped into a soft direct market and has never developed a collector narrative of its own; single copies circulate through general-inventory dealers and eBay at nominal prices, and complete runs of the volume routinely change hands as bulk lots at a few dollars per book. Certification is rare enough that no reliable public sales record for a high-grade slab of this issue is visible, which in practice means a certified copy is valued against the cost of grading rather than against demonstrated demand. Nothing in the issue — no first appearance, origin, or death — supplies the catalyst that lifts comparable modern books.
Buyers are run collectors completing the eighteen-issue volume, Busiek and Larsen completists, and Hellcat or Headmen specialists filling character shelves. Across grades the spread is compressed: mid-grade and low-grade raw copies are functionally reading material and are usually acquired in groups rather than singly, while near-mint raw copies command only a modest premium because supply in high grade is ample. Certified examples appeal to registry-set builders working the Defenders franchise and should be approached as a thin, illiquid market where a sale depends on finding the one collector who needs the slot.
