Fantastic Four #77 (August 1968) arrives during the Lee-Kirby run's exploration of the Silver Surfer's imprisonment on Earth, a plot thread launched in the original Galactus trilogy and expanded across the late-1960s issues as Marvel prepared to give the Surfer his own solo title the same month. Stan Lee's scripting and Jack Kirby's penciling, inked by Joe Sinnott, place the character in conflict with Earth's First Family, reinforcing the cosmic scope the series had taken on since the Galactus saga. The issue is representative of the Fourth World-adjacent cosmic ambition Kirby brought to the title in its middle stretch, with the Surfer's tragic, earthbound status a recurring emotional anchor.
Market data shows a broad, well-populated census (789 Universal copies) with steady collector interest across the grade spectrum rather than a single spike tied to a first appearance. Values climb gradually through the mid grades and then rise sharply at the top end, from roughly $150-$290 in NM ranges to $650 at 9.6, with only a handful of 9.8s certified and no recent FMV recorded at that grade — consistent with a well-loved but not headline-key Silver Age issue where high-grade survivors are scarce relative to demand. Silver Surfer's cover presence, rather than any origin or first-appearance status, is the principal driver of demand for this specific issue within FF's Kirby-era run.
This book suits Silver Age Marvel collectors building a complete Kirby Fantastic Four run and Silver Surfer character collectors looking for appearances outside his solo title. Lower and mid-grade raw copies trade as affordable, accessible pieces of the run, while surviving high-grade examples command a real premium due to genuine scarcity at 9.6 and above; a certified 9.8, should one trade, would likely set a new high-water mark given the current absence of recorded sales at that grade.
