Fantastic Four #78 arrived in September 1968 during the celebrated Lee-Kirby run that defined Marvel's early cosmic and street-level storytelling in a single title. Scripted by Stan Lee, penciled by Jack Kirby, and inked by Joe Sinnott, the issue pits the team against the Mad Thinker's android duplicate of the Thing, a plot device that let Kirby stage some of his most kinetic slugfest artwork of the period. While the issue introduces no new characters or lasting Marvel Universe milestones, it stands as a representative example of the Kirby-Sinnott art team at the height of its collaborative polish, with a striking cover image of the Thing battling his mechanical double.
Market data shows a well-populated census exceeding 700 certified copies, reflecting sustained collector interest in the title rather than scarcity-driven demand. Values climb steadily but not steeply through the mid grades, with a pronounced jump above 9.4 as high-grade white-page copies become harder to find; the 9.6 tier alone accounts for over fifty census copies and a firm $450 FMV, while no 9.8 has yet been certified, pointing to genuine difficulty in the title achieving pristine preservation despite decades in circulation. Demand is driven primarily by run-builders assembling complete Lee-Kirby Fantastic Four sets and by Kirby cover collectors rather than key-issue speculators.
This is a book collected as part of a broader Silver Age Fantastic Four run rather than pursued as a standalone key, so it trades in a fairly narrow band through the low and mid grades before value accelerates sharply near the top of the certified population. Entry-level and mid-grade raw copies remain accessible to general collectors, while top-census slabs will appeal mainly to Kirby completists and high-grade Fantastic Four registry builders willing to pay a scarcity premium for a grade the market has yet to see certified.
