Fantastic Four #319 (October 1988) arrived during Steve Englehart's tenure as writer, with art by Keith Pollard and inks by Romeo Tanghal, a period marked by soap-operatic reinventions of the team's roster and status quo following Byrne's celebrated run. The issue falls within Marvel's 1988 continuity during the citywide Inferno event, when demonic possession swept New York and cast a supernatural shadow across several ongoing titles, including this one. It carries no first appearance, death, or origin of lasting significance, and its place in the run is best understood as a solid, representative chapter of the era's ongoing team dynamics rather than a landmark single issue.
Market activity reflects that assessment: certified sales are thin across nearly every grade, with only a handful of transactions recorded even at the top of the census, and no completed sales at all in several mid and high grades. Demand is modest and steady rather than driven by any first-appearance premium, with values climbing sharply only at the pinnacle grade where scarcity of true Gemstone-quality copies asserts itself over the broader run of nines. This pattern is typical of a well-regarded but non-key Copper Age Fantastic Four issue, where completism and team loyalty sustain a baseline of interest.
Collectors of this book are overwhelmingly FF run-builders and Englehart/Pollard-era completists rather than key-issue speculators, and the book trades accordingly: inexpensively in low and mid raw grades, with value concentrated almost entirely in pristine, high-census slabs. Because so few 9.8s exist relative to the overall population, that top grade commands an outsized premium, but buyers should expect this issue to remain a steady, unspectacular presence in bulk lots and long-box runs rather than a headline lot.
