// Archive commentary
Fantastic Four #318 arrived in September 1988 during Steve Englehart's tenure as writer, with art by Keith Pollard, part of the post-John Byrne stretch of the series as it worked through changing creative teams and status-quo shifts for Marvel's First Family. The issue features the core lineup of Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing in a standard team adventure typical of the era, without any first appearance, death, or landmark story beat that collectors single out as historically significant.
Market data reflects a book valued primarily as a well-produced but unremarkable Copper Age title: raw copies in low and mid grade carry only nominal value, while the CGC 9.8 population of over three dozen certified copies keeps top-grade pricing modest and stable rather than driven by scarcity. Demand is steady but limited, consistent with completist collecting of the Fantastic Four run rather than any speculative or key-issue interest.
This is a book for series completists and long-run Fantastic Four collectors rather than investors chasing appreciation. Lower and mid-grade raw copies move cheaply and frequently as reading or filler copies, while graded 9.8 slabs trade in a narrow, predictable price band supported by a large certified population. It is best positioned in inventory as an affordable addition to Copper Age Marvel runs rather than a standalone highlight.
