Fantastic Four #231 (June 1981) arrives during the Doug Moench writing run, with art chores split between Bill Sienkiewicz, who also provides the cover, and veteran journeyman Frank Giacoia. The issue continues the team's Bronze Age adventures with an alien menace, Stygorr, set against the domestic backdrop of Franklin Richards and the supporting cast including Alicia Masters and Lorrie Melton. It is a representative mid-run issue rather than a landmark one, with no first appearances, deaths, or origin material to anchor collector demand beyond the creative team.
Market data reflects this standing: certified copies show a relatively flat value curve until the top of the grade scale, where scarcity in true Gem Mint condition creates modest separation. Sales activity is thin across most grades, with only a handful of transactions recorded outside the 9.6-9.8 range, indicating a book that circulates in bulk boxes and back-issue bins more than at auction. Sienkiewicz's early, angular art style on the title has a following among Bronze Age Marvel completists and artist-specific collectors, which provides some underlying demand even without a key-issue narrative.
This is a collector's book for Fantastic Four run-builders and Sienkiewicz enthusiasts rather than speculators chasing appreciation. Raw copies in low and mid grades trade for a few dollars and are readily available, while high-grade census population is thin enough that a true 9.8 commands a real premium relative to the rest of the curve. Most transactions will occur as part of run assembly or dealer bulk lots, with occasional single-copy sales driven by grade rarity at the top end.
