// Archive commentary
Fantastic Four #229 arrives well into the Doug Moench/Bill Sienkiewicz stretch on the title, a run notable chiefly for Sienkiewicz's increasingly expressionistic pencils over Joe Sinnott's veteran inks. The issue continues an arc involving the mysterious Ebon Seeker and the energy-being Firefrost, with the core team of Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and Thing supported by series regulars Franklin Richards, Alicia Masters, and Lorrie Melton. There is no first appearance, death, or landmark story beat here; its interest lies almost entirely in the creative team rather than any single event within the plot.
Market data reflects a book with a large certified population (105 graded copies) but comparatively thin trading activity outside the top grade. High-grade 9.8 copies have shown real sustained demand, with dozens of recorded sales and FMV holding near recent highs, driven by Sienkiewicz-run completists and Fantastic Four grade-chasers rather than broad speculative interest. Mid- and low-grade raw copies see little transactional visibility, consistent with a common, mass-printed newsstand issue that was never a spotlight book in its own era.
This is a collector's book for FF-run completists and Sienkiewicz art fans building out his short but stylistically distinct tenure on the title, rather than a speculative or investment-grade key. Demand concentrates sharply at the top of the grading scale, where clean 9.8 census copies are scarce enough to command a real premium; raw copies in circulated grades trade near bulk-book levels and are readily available to fill a run rather than pursued individually.
