Fantastic Four #20, cover-dated November 1963, introduces the Molecule Man, one of the more enduring cosmic-tier villains in the Marvel pantheon, in a story written by Stan Lee with pencils by Jack Kirby and inks by Dick Ayers. The issue arrives during the title's foundational early run, when Lee and Kirby were rapidly expanding the FF's rogues' gallery beyond the Skrulls, Mole Man, and Doctor Doom, establishing the book as the flagship of the emerging Marvel line. The Molecule Man's premise, an ordinary man granted the power to manipulate matter itself, gave the team an opponent of theoretically limitless power, a concept later writers would return to repeatedly, cementing the character's relevance across decades of Marvel continuity.
Market data shows a large certified population exceeding 1,300 graded copies, with steady demand across the grade spectrum and a pronounced value curve above 9.0 as high-grade copies become scarce. Recent sales activity clusters most heavily in the mid-to-high grade tiers (7.0 through 9.4), with the 9.4 tier showing consistent multi-thousand-dollar trades and a tightening one-year average, indicating sustained collector interest rather than a speculative spike. The near-total absence of certified 9.6 and 9.8 sales data reflects genuine scarcity at the top of the census rather than lack of demand, a common pattern for early 1960s Marvel first appearances.
This book draws a mix of Silver Age Marvel completists, first-appearance specialists, and Fantastic Four run collectors, giving it broad and durable demand across grade levels. Lower grades trade briskly as reading or filler copies for those building a complete FF run, while mid-grade copies remain the most liquid segment given the depth of sales at 4.0 through 8.0. Top-census copies are rarely offered and would be expected to draw significant competition given the combination of a recognized first appearance, Kirby cover art, and a certified population of only two copies at the highest universal grade.
