// Archive commentary
Fantastic Four #198 arrived during Marv Wolfman's late-1970s run on the title, with Keith Pollard on pencils and Joe Sinnott providing his customary finishing inks. The issue continues a multi-part Doctor Doom storyline built around a succession crisis in Latveria, pitting the Fantastic Four against Doom and the pretender Zorba Fortunov. It is a solid example of the era's house style: a well-regarded villain, a competent creative team, and connective plotting typical of the ongoing series rather than a standalone landmark. No first appearances, deaths, or other historically pivotal events occur in this issue.
The market data reflects a book that is plentiful in high grade and traded steadily rather than one driven by speculative demand. With 146 Universal copies on census and the bulk of sales concentrated in the 8.5-9.8 range, the FMV curve is fairly typical of a well-preserved but non-key Bronze Age Marvel: value climbs gradually through the mid grades before a pronounced jump into 9.6 and 9.8, where Doom-cover books and complete Wolfman/Pollard runs see the most collector interest. Lower and mid-grade copies see thin trading and modest pricing, consistent with a book valued mainly as run-filler rather than a stand-alone target.
This issue is best suited to Fantastic Four completists and Doctor Doom collectors assembling the full Latverian arc, rather than buyers chasing key-issue upside. Raw copies in low and mid grade trade cheaply and are readily available; the real premium sits with pristine 9.6-9.8 slabs, where scarcity of true gem-mint survivors, rather than any narrative significance, sets the price ceiling. Across grades, expect the book to move in tandem with broader Bronze Age Marvel demand rather than on its own individual merits.
