Fantastic Four #197 (Marvel, August 1978) finds the team once again squaring off against Doctor Doom, with the Soviet super-scientist Red Ghost and his simianized cosmic-ray-empowered agents complicating the conflict. Marv Wolfman scripts during his run on the title, with Keith Pollard on pencils and longtime Fantastic Four inker Joe Sinnott providing finishes that lend the art a visual continuity with the Lee/Kirby and Lee/Buscema eras. The issue is a solid, well-produced installment of the series' Cold War-inflected adventures but does not introduce any new characters, concepts, or firsts of note.
Market data reflects the profile of a plentiful, non-key Bronze Age issue: a large certified population (160 Universal copies on census out of 166 total graded) keeps values compressed across nearly the entire grading spectrum, with raw and mid-grade certified copies commanding only nominal sums. Demand is concentrated almost entirely at the top of the grade curve, where CGC 9.8 copies have seen a recent uptick in realized prices, pointing to a renewed but narrow interest in pristine Bronze Age Marvel product rather than any broad-based collector push for this specific issue.
This is a completist's or series-collector's book rather than a marquee investment piece. Low- and mid-grade raw copies serve mainly to round out long runs of Fantastic Four for readers and Wolfman/Pollard-era enthusiasts, trading for modest sums with little grade sensitivity below the mid grades. The real activity is at the CGC 9.8 tier, where a thin supply of true gem-mint survivors and steady submission volume keep the top end liquid and slowly appreciating, making high-grade slabs the only meaningful play for this issue.
