Daredevil #22 falls inside the Bob Gale-written "Trial of the Century" storyline that occupied the title between Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack's "Wake Up" and the arrival of the Bendis-Alex Maleev run. Gale, best known outside comics as co-writer of Back to the Future, built the arc around a civil suit that forces Matt Murdock to defend Daredevil in open court, a courtroom-driven premise that leans on the lawyer half of the character rather than on costumed conflict. Phil Winslade pencils the interiors with Chris Chuckry on color, and David Mack supplies the painted cover, part of the continuous Mack cover program that gave the Marvel Knights volume its recognizable shelf identity. No first appearance, origin, or death occurs here; the issue's interest is as a chapter of a well-regarded creative period on the title.

Market behavior follows the pattern for early-2000s Marvel Knights Daredevil: readily available in high grade, cheap raw, and thinly traded in slabs. Print runs of the period were modest by 1990s standards but distribution was direct-market and largely to collectors, so surviving copies skew to near mint and there is no scarcity premium at the top of the grade scale. Demand for the run is driven by the Bendis-Maleev issues that follow and by collectors assembling the volume complete; individual Gale-arc issues most often move in lots or as fill-in singles. Certified copies exist chiefly because of David Mack signature-series submissions, and those signed slabs trade at a visible premium to plain Universal copies of the same grade.

Buyers are set collectors completing Daredevil volume two, David Mack cover completists, and readers working through the Marvel Knights era in single issues. Low-grade copies of a book this recent have essentially reading-copy value and rarely warrant individual listing; mid-grade sits barely above that, since the same issue in very fine or better is easy to source for pocket change. The economic case for grading is weak unless the copy is signed, which is where nearly all of the certified market activity for this issue sits. Steady, unspectacular liquidity should be expected: the book sells when priced as run filler, and stalls when priced as a key.
