// Condition analysis
Cover shows notable wear including a soft, rounded top-right corner and a small chip at the top edge near the spine. There are visible surface scuffs and light discoloration in the lower left and lower right portions of the cover, along with some minor edge wear along the left spine area. The cover retains good gloss and color overall with no major creases or tears visible, but the corner softness and edge chipping are consistent with a mid-grade copy. Interior and back cover were not assessed from this photo.

// Archive commentary
Challengers of the Unknown #40 arrived in late 1964 as a mid-run entry in DC's long-standing adventure series about four daredevils – Ace Morgan, Professor Haley, Rocky Davis, and Red Ryan, joined by scientist June Robbins – who cheat death and go on to face bizarre menaces around the globe. The team was created by Jack Kirby in the late 1950s before he departed the title early in its run, and by the mid-1960s the book had settled into a house style typical of DC's science-fiction and monster-adventure line, continuing the blend of pulp peril and speculative menace that defined the series' identity. Issue #40 does not carry a first appearance, origin story, or other landmark distinction; it represents the steady, unglamorous backbone of the Challengers' catalog.
