Cover shows moderate wear consistent with a mid-grade Silver Age book: visible spine stress lines and a couple of small ticks along the spine, soft/rounded corners especially at the top right, and a small edge tear or chip visible on the right side near the middle of the book. There is minor surface wear and light handling creases across the cover art, plus slight yellowing at the edges typical of age. The book is housed in a protective sleeve, and only the front cover was assessed – interior pages and back cover condition are unknown.

Challengers of the Unknown #39, cover dated September 1964, sits in the post-Kirby stretch of DC's pioneering adventure team title, the book that established the four-man exploration unit template Jack Kirby and Dave Wood introduced in Showcase in 1957. By this point the art chores belonged to Bob Brown, whose clean, workmanlike draftsmanship carried the series through the middle 1960s, with Arnold Drake supplying scripts in this period. The issue leads with "The Phantom of the Fair!" and backs it with "Rocky, the Genius Challenger," featuring the standard lineup of Ace Morgan, Red Ryan, Prof Haley and Rocky Davis in the science-adventure mode that distinguished the title from DC's costumed-hero line. It carries no first appearance or origin content and is not cited as a key by the standard guides.

Market behavior follows the pattern of any non-key mid-run Silver Age DC from a collected but second-tier series: steady, low-dollar turnover in raw grades, with almost all activity concentrated on eBay and in dealer back-issue stock rather than at auction. Demand comes from run collectors filling the 30s and 40s, not from speculators, so the price curve is flat through the low and middle grades and only steepens sharply at the top of the census. High-grade certified examples are genuinely scarce because the title was printed in modest quantities and rarely saved carefully, which means certified pricing for this issue rests on comparable Brown-era Challengers rather than on the issue itself. Multi-Man appearances and the Doom Patrol crossover later in the run pull collector attention away from issues like this one.

The buyer pool is narrow but durable: Challengers completists, Bob Brown followers, and Silver Age DC collectors assembling the full 1958-1970 run. Beat-up copies trade as reader and gap-filler material and move quickly at modest money; VG to FN copies are the workhorse grade and the most liquid, appearing regularly in dealer inventory and multi-issue lots. Certification is difficult to justify economically unless a copy presents as strict Near Mint or better, in which case scarcity at the top of the census does the pricing work and a sale may take patience to find the right run collector. Buyers seeking upside should look to the recognized keys in the series; this issue is best acquired as a solid, honest run book.
