Written by Len Kaminski with pencils, inks and cover by Tom Morgan, Iron Man #309 closes out the run-up to the "Hands of the Mandarin" crossover that ran across Iron Man, War Machine and Force Works in late 1994. Tony Stark, still in the Modular Armor, battles VOR/TEX while the Mandarin continues assembling his rings of power; the artifact known as the Heart of Darkness makes its first appearance, and Veronica Benning departs the supporting cast. War Machine appears alongside Stark, and the issue functions as connective tissue for readers following the crossover in order rather than as a standalone story.

Market profile is that of a common mid-1990s Marvel direct edition. Print runs in this window were large, distribution was heavily direct-market, and the book has no first appearance of a lasting character, no origin, and no cover widely cited by price guides. Third-party sales data is correspondingly sparse: the issue registers only a handful of tracked transactions, and certified copies rarely surface because grading costs exceed any plausible resale premium. Demand comes almost entirely from run collectors filling the 300s and from readers assembling the Mandarin crossover, both of which are satisfied by inexpensive raw copies.
