Cover shows strong gloss and sharp corners with no visible creases or spine stress lines. Slight edge wear is possible at the top corners but not clearly visible through the protective sleeve. Colors appear bright and unfaded, with no stains or writing visible. The book is in a protective sleeve which obscures some fine detail; interior and back cover were not assessed.

West Coast Avengers #38, cover-dated November 1988, is a fill-in story scripted by D.G. Chichester and Margaret Clark with pencils by Tom Morgan and inks by Dave Hunt, produced during the closing stretch of Steve Englehart's run on the title. The narrative is set at an earlier point in the team's history, before Tony Stark's Iron Man had stepped away and after Henry Pym had taken up his Dr. Pym identity, giving the issue a lineup of Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Wonder Man, Tigra, the Vision, the Scarlet Witch and Iron Man alongside Mantis. It marks the first appearance of the Defiler, a villain who never developed a following, and it slots into the broader story of Marvel's first Avengers spin-off, a book that would be renamed Avengers West Coast a few issues later.

Commercially the issue behaves like the rest of the series' mid-run: high print quantities from the peak direct-market period, abundant supply in dealer stock and collection breaks, and buyers who are assembling runs rather than chasing a single book. There is no sustained certified market — the census carries few if any graded examples and recorded sales are sporadic, so slabbed pricing is governed less by demand than by the cost of grading and shipping a common late-1980s comic. Interest in the West Coast Avengers roster has risen intermittently with screen speculation around the Vision, the Scarlet Witch, Mockingbird and Hawkeye, but that attention has consistently concentrated on the series' recognized keys, particularly the limited series, the first issue of the ongoing, and the Byrne-era Vision Quest arc.

The natural buyers are run collectors filling the #30s, Chichester and Tom Morgan completists, and Defiler-specific character collectors, a small group. Across grades the spread is compressed: low-grade copies function as reading stock, mid-grade copies trade at effectively the same modest level as higher raw grades, and only a genuinely pristine copy justifies certification, which is why the certified figure sits well above raw without reflecting any underlying scarcity of the book itself. For a dealer archive this is inventory best moved as part of a run lot or a series set rather than priced individually.
