The West Coast Avengers #12 (September 1986) comes from the heart of Steve Englehart's tenure on the title, with pencils by Al Milgrom and inks by Joe Sinnott over Milgrom's cover. Hawkeye's California roster — Mockingbird, Iron Man, Wonder Man and Tigra, with Henry Pym in a supporting civilian role — faces a three-pronged assault from the energy elemental Zzzax alongside the debuting Quantum and Halflife, with a returning Avengers adversary revealed as the hand behind the attack. The issue sits directly ahead of the run's most discussed sequence, the time-travel arc collected as "Lost in Space-Time," and functions as setup for that material. The new villains introduced here have seen only intermittent use since, which keeps the issue's historical weight modest.

Market behavior follows the pattern for mid-run Copper Age Marvel team books printed in heavy quantities. Raw copies are abundant in higher grades because most surviving examples came out of direct-market shops and went straight into bags and boards, so genuinely low-grade examples are uncommon without being desirable. Across grades the spread is compressed: mid-grade and low-grade raw copies trade close together at near-bulk levels, and virtually all of the value sits in top-census certified copies, where the premium reflects grading cost and scarcity of qualifying copies more than character demand. Newsstand examples of this period are scarcer than direct-market copies and can attract a modest premium from specialists, but the direct edition is the default for the grade-conscious buyer.
