The Eternal #1 arrived in January 2003 as part of Marvel's MAX imprint, the mature-readers line launched in 2001 to house grittier, more explicit takes on both established characters and new properties. This title introduced its own original lead rather than drawing on the Kirby Eternals mythology, positioning itself alongside other short-run MAX experiments of the period that explored war, espionage, and hard-edged adventure storytelling outside the confines of the Comics Code-adjacent mainstream Marvel Universe.

As a lesser-known entry in a crowded imprint that also produced longer-running successes like Alias and Wolverine MAX, The Eternal did not sustain the sales or cultural traction of its imprint-mates, and it has not attracted a dedicated collector following or price-guide listing. It circulated in modest direct-market quantities typical of a mid-list MAX book, and it shows up today mostly in back-issue bins and online lots rather than as a targeted acquisition.

This is a book for imprint completists and MAX-line historians rather than mainstream key-issue buyers. Raw copies move at or near cover price regardless of condition demand, and grading it in high certified condition is largely a matter of novelty or completing a MAX imprint run rather than chasing character or creator significance; the population of certified copies remains thin, and pricing at the top end should be treated as speculative until more sales data accumulates.
