There are minor spine stress lines visible and some faint creasing across the lower portion of the cover; the book is in a protective sleeve which shows some scuffing but this does not appear to be damage to the comic itself. No tears or missing pieces are visible, and colors remain bright with good ink saturation. Interior pages and back cover were not assessed as only the front cover is shown.

Tales to Astonish #81 arrived in mid-1966 as part of the title's split-feature era, pairing an ongoing Sub-Mariner serial with a solo Hulk adventure. By this point the book had settled into its familiar Silver Age Marvel rhythm: Stan Lee scripting both strips, Jack Kirby handling Hulk pencils, and the undersea Prince Namor saga continuing its long-running entanglement with Lady Dorma and the machinations of Attuma and Krang. The issue reflects Marvel's mid-1960s strategy of running two strong second-tier heroes in a single anthology-style book while readers waited for Namor and the Hulk to earn their own solo titles.

This issue suits collectors building complete Sub-Mariner or Hulk Silver Age runs rather than those chasing a marquee key, and it trades accordingly: readily available and inexpensive in low and mid grades, with value climbing steeply only at the uppermost certified tiers where supply becomes genuinely scarce. Investment-oriented buyers are more likely to target this book as a supporting piece within a broader Tales to Astonish set than as a standalone centerpiece.
