TALES TO ASTONISH #65

Cover shows significant handling wear consistent with a mid-grade Silver Age book: heavy creasing running diagonally across the Giant-Man figure, multiple stress lines near the spine, and a distinct black tape/residue mark on the left-center of the cover that appears to have removed some color. There is noticeable overall tanning/browning of the paper stock, soft/rounded corners, and minor edge chipping along the top and right borders. The book is housed in a protective sleeve, which limited close inspection, and the back cover and interior pages were not assessed.

Tales to Astonish #65 (March 1965) marks the debut of Hank Pym's third superheroic identity, Goliath, following his runs as Ant-Man and Giant-Man. Scripted by Stan Lee with a cover by Jack Kirby and interior art credited to Bob Powell, the issue finds Pym adopting the growth-based Goliath persona alongside the Wasp, a costume-and-power shift that would carry him through the remainder of his Tales to Astonish tenure and into the Avengers. The issue also carries a Sub-Mariner backup drawn by Gene Colan under the pseudonym Adam Austin, adding a secondary point of interest for Silver Age Marvel completists.

The FMV curve reflects sustained collector demand typical of a recognized Silver Age first-appearance issue: mid-grade copies trade in the modest double digits, but values accelerate sharply above 9.0, with 9.4 copies averaging several hundred dollars and 9.6 copies breaking into four figures on a thin population of nine census copies and three recorded sales. That steep grade-to-price slope, combined with a census top of only two 9.8s and just a single recorded transaction at that grade, points to meaningful scarcity pressure at the summit of the census and a corresponding premium for any copy that could clear that bar.

This is a book bought primarily by Marvel Silver Age specialists and Avengers-adjacent key collectors rather than casual buyers of average Giant-Man/Goliath-era issues, and its trading pattern mirrors many similar transitional-identity keys: broad, affordable availability through mid-grade, with values climbing steeply and unevenly as certified grade rises toward the top of the census. Given the low 9.8 population, top-end examples should be expected to command outsized premiums relative to 9.4-9.6 comps whenever they do surface at auction.
