TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED #77

This is a pre-1977 DC book so no direct/newsstand distinction applies. Cover shows moderate wear typical of a Silver Age comic: visible creasing across the lower portion near the caption box, some surface wear and rubbing especially at corners, a spine that appears to have minor stress but no major color break visible, and slight discoloration/soiling along the edges. The book is protected in a plastic sleeve which reflects light but the cover art is bright and complete with no major tears. Tales of the Unexpected #77 arrived from DC Comics in the summer of 1963, part of a long-running science-fiction and suspense anthology line that had shifted away from its early Space Ranger feature toward stand-alone twist-ending sci-fi and fantasy stories in the mold of DC's other mystery titles of the period. Recorded sales cluster in the mid-to-high grade tiers, with prices climbing sharply from the low hundreds at 8.5 and 9.2, reflecting the premium collectors place on scarce high-grade Silver Age anthology material even absent a marquee key status. Demand is modest and steady, driven by anthology-title completists and Silver Age DC readers rather than broad speculative interest.

This is a book for the specialist rather than the generalist collector: raw copies in lower grades trade cheaply and infrequently, mid-grade copies see occasional turnover among Silver Age DC anthology collectors, and any future high-grade certified copy, particularly a 9.6 or above, would likely command a strong premium simply on the basis of extreme scarcity at the top of the census. Buyers should expect thin comps and wide bid-ask spreads at the high end until more certified examples surface.
