This 1968 pre-direct market issue shows significant wear consistent with a mid-grade copy: heavy spine stress with multiple visible ticks and slight color break along the top spine edge, a noticeable crease/dent at the upper left corner area, and rubbing/wear along the top edge with some paper loss visible at the top right corner. There is a small pen or pencil mark on Namor's chest, and the cover shows overall surface wear and mild discoloration consistent with age. The book is in a protective sleeve, which adds some glare, and the interior and back cover were not assessed.

Sub-Mariner #1 (May 1968) launched Namor McKenzie's first ongoing solo title after years of guest appearances and split-book billing in Tales to Astonish and Daredevil. Scripted by Roy Thomas with art by John Buscema, the issue picks up directly from Namor's Tales to Astonish run and reintroduces his supporting cast, including Lady Dorma and the villainous Warlord Krang, as Atlantis's ruler consolidates his own book at the height of Marvel's late-1960s expansion into single-character titles. While Namor's first appearance dates to Marvel Comics #1 (1939), this issue holds a distinct place as the character's first standalone Silver Age vehicle and an early Buscema cover for the character.

The FMV curve shows a large surviving population at low-to-mid grades, consistent with a widely distributed 1968 newsstand title, with prices staying compressed and modest through 8.0 and only beginning meaningful acceleration above 9.2. The real demand signal appears at the top of the census: 9.6 copies trade near $1,650-1,800 while 9.8s command roughly $7,350-7,750, a disproportionate premium given the census only separates 94 copies at 9.8 from 181 at 9.6. That gap indicates active high-grade competition among Silver Age Marvel completists and Namor specialists rather than broad speculative demand.

This is a collected-series staple rather than a blue-chip key, so most trading activity centers on readers and run-builders acquiring raw copies in the $40-150 range to fill out Silver Age Marvel or Sub-Mariner sets. Top-grade 9.8 copies draw a narrower but committed buyer base willing to pay a steep premium for census-topping examples, making the high end of the market considerably more volatile and provenance-sensitive than the well-supplied mid and low grades.
