There is noticeable soiling, staining, and color rub particularly in the orange cover area, plus a small paper loss near the upper right cover text. The spine shows significant stress with visible creasing and tape reinforcement rather than clean rolls. Interior and back cover were not assessed from this photo, but the front cover condition alone places this well into the low-grade range typical of a well-read 1943 pulp comic.

Whiz Comics was Fawcett Publications' cornerstone anthology and the home title of Captain Marvel, the World's Mightiest Mortal, whose adventures made the series one of the best-selling superhero books of the early 1940s. Issue #42, cover-dated May 1943, is a wartime entry produced at the height of Captain Marvel's popularity, when the character's sales rivaled and at times exceeded those of Superman. The C.C. Beck house style defines the era's clean, buoyant look, and the title also carried backup features including Ibis the Invincible, Spy Smasher, and Golden Arrow, giving each issue the variety-package appeal typical of Golden Age anthologies.

This is a mid-run Golden Age issue rather than a recognized key, and its market reflects that: certified demand is real but sales are thin, with only a small population graded and single-sale datapoints across most high grades. Values climb steeply toward the top of the census, a classic pattern for scarce wartime paper where survivors in strong condition are genuinely uncommon. The absence of any 9.8 or better on the census underscores how difficult these books are to find well-preserved, which supports a meaningful premium for the finest certified examples over the mid-tier grades.

Buyers here are Golden Age and Captain Marvel/Fawcett specialists, along with collectors assembling Whiz Comics runs. Low- and mid-grade raw copies trade affordably and are the accessible entry point, moving on eye appeal and completeness of the run. High-grade certified copies are a different market entirely, drawing competitive bidding from condition-focused collectors precisely because so few exist; expect the spread between mid and top grades to remain wide and the top end to stay illiquid but strong.
