THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #55

This 1964 12-cent Silver Age issue (pre-1977, so no direct/newsstand distinction applies) shows significant handling wear typical of a mid-grade Silver Age book. There is heavy spine stress with multiple vertical creases and color break along the spine, notable corner wear especially at the top corners which appear rounded and worn, and small edge chips visible along the right border and bottom edge. There is a name written in ink ('Elvira') at the top of the cover which is a permanent defect, plus general surface wear, minor creasing across the cover art, and the book is currently housed in a protective sleeve. Interior pages and back cover were not visible in this photo and were not assessed.

The Brave and the Bold #55 (September 1964) belongs to the title's mid-1960s incarnation as a rotating hero team-up anthology, several years before it settled into the Batman-and-guest-star format that would define its later run. This issue pairs Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) with the Atom (Ray Palmer) against the recurring DC villain Solomon Grundy, continuing the Silver Age practice of using Brave and the Bold to test cross-pollinated pairings of Justice League members outside their own titles.

Market data shows a typical low-to-mid population Silver Age curve: certified copies trade modestly through the 6.0-8.0 range before climbing sharply at 9.0 and above, with 9.6 copies commanding a clear premium over 9.4 and below. Demand is driven primarily by Green Lantern and Atom completists and by Brave and the Bold team-up-era collectors rather than by any first appearance or origin story, since neither hero nor villain debuts here. The absence of any 9.8 sale despite a small top-census population reflects how thinly these grades trade rather than any lack of interest.

This is a book for run collectors of Brave and the Bold, Green Lantern, or Atom rather than key-issue speculators. Lower and mid-grade raw copies move steadily as affordable pieces of a longer collecting project, while gem-quality certified copies are scarce enough that pricing above 9.4 should be treated as thin-market and subject to real volatility until more top-grade sales establish a firmer benchmark.
