Superman: Birthright #9 is part of the twelve-issue prestige-format miniseries written by Mark Waid with art by Leinil Francis Yu and inks by Gerry Alanguilan, published by DC Comics as a 2003-2004 attempt to modernize and consolidate Superman's origin for a new generation of readers. This installment falls in the back half of the series, as the narrative moves through Clark Kent's early career in Metropolis and his escalating conflict with Lex Luthor, building toward the miniseries' climax. Birthright arrived at a moment when DC was actively reconsidering Superman's continuity ahead of the character's various screen and comics relaunches, and Waid's take on Kryptonian history and Luthor's motivations would echo in Superman storytelling for years afterward, most visibly in elements later folded into Superman's on-screen origin films.

As a middle chapter of a well-regarded but standard direct-market miniseries, issue #9 does not carry a first appearance, death, or other event that collectors chase, and it was produced and distributed in the volume typical of an ongoing DC project during the mid-2000s. Raw copies in any condition trade cheaply and are easy to source; the only meaningful value tier is a high-grade certified slab, which appeals to a narrow set of grader-driven buyers rather than general Superman collectors, and even there demand is modest compared to genuine keys from the same era.
