The front cover shows sharp, well-defined corners with no visible bluntness or creasing, and the ink colors (reds, blues, yellow highlights) remain bright and unfaded. No spine stress lines, color-breaking creases, tears, or surface stains are visible in this front-cover image. The gloss appears intact with no scuffing or scratches noted, though the spine, back cover, and interior pages were not visible for assessment, limiting the grade to a conservative high-grade estimate.

Star Brand #1 launched the flagship title of Marvel's New Universe, the ambitious line introduced for the company's 25th anniversary in 1986 and set in a world meant to mirror our own. Editor-in-chief Jim Shooter wrote the series and John Romita Jr. handled the art, introducing Ken Connell, an ordinary Pittsburgh mechanic who inherits the Star Brand, a cosmic power source rendered as a distinctive star-shaped mark. The New Universe premise, that a single "White Event" grants powers within a grounded, consequence-driven reality, was a notable creative experiment and Star Brand was its most heavily promoted property.
Demand tracks the mixed legacy of the New Universe: the line was commercially disappointing and most of its titles are common, plentiful Copper Age books. The certified population skews heavily toward high grade, reflecting how many copies were preserved by speculators, and top-grade 9.8 examples carry the only meaningful premium, though even those have cooled over the past year. Below the top grade, values compress quickly and mid-grade certified copies trade for a fraction of the 9.8, a pattern typical of an abundant, well-preserved modern book with limited character following.
This is primarily a completist and Marvel-history purchase rather than a broad-market key. Buyers are collectors assembling New Universe runs or those drawn to the Shooter/Romita creative pairing and the first Star Brand appearance. In high-grade slabs it holds steady collector interest; raw copies in any grade are inexpensive and readily found, so the practical entry point for most buyers is a clean 9.6 or 9.8 slab rather than a raw copy.
