Published in July 1997 as Marvel's stand-alone "'97" annual following the numbered 1988-1994 Silver Surfer Annual run, this 48-page prestige one-shot carries a wraparound cover by Val Semeiks and Klaus Janson. J.M. DeMatteis and Tom DeFalco script "The Awakening!", in which the god-like Scrier rouses from long dormancy and attempts to bind the Surfer to his service, a story that expands the Scrier concept introduced during the Spider-Man clone storyline into a cosmic-scale antagonist and feeds directly into the Mephisto and Scrier material running through Silver Surfer volume 3 in 1997-1998. Semeiks pencils with Janson inks and Tom Smith colors give the book a heavier, more grounded look than the airbrushed cosmic style associated with the character's earlier annuals.

Market behavior matches that of most late-1990s Marvel annuals: print runs were modest by boom-era standards but demand is thinner still, so raw copies circulate freely at bargain-bin and shipping-cost levels regardless of whether they present as unread. The book has no recognized key status to drive speculation, and Scrier has never carried enough recognition outside continuity readers to generate the kind of first-appearance chase that lifts comparable modern issues. Certified copies are scarce simply because grading fees exceed the raw value, which means the small certified population, rather than any underlying scarcity, is what supports the premium at the top of the scale.

Buyers are principally Silver Surfer completists, DeMatteis readers, and collectors assembling the Scrier arc across Silver Surfer volume 3. Below high grade the book trades as filler and is most efficiently acquired inside run lots, where per-issue cost approaches nothing. Only census-quality copies justify certification, and even then the ceiling is set by grading economics rather than by collector competition; sellers should expect slow, thin trading and price accordingly.
