Showcase #82 (May 1969) is a late entry in DC's long-running try-out anthology, spotlighting the debut of Jonny Double, a hardboiled private investigator conceived by writer Jack Miller with art by Jack Sparling. Arriving near the tail end of Showcase's run, the issue is emblematic of DC's continued experimentation with new genres and characters during a period when the try-out format was winding down in favor of dedicated ongoing series and team books. Jonny Double never graduated to his own title and made only sporadic later appearances, but the issue remains a documented first appearance cited in standard character references.

The certified market for this issue is thin and heavily bottom-weighted: mid-grade copies (8.0 through 9.4) trade in a narrow, flat band, reflecting steady but modest collector interest rather than active bidding pressure. This is a book for Showcase run completists and Silver Age DC specialists rather than character-driven buyers, since Jonny Double has no significant modern-day visibility. Raw copies in low and mid grades move slowly and cheaply, consistent with a back-issue-bin title, while high-grade certified copies command a disproportionate premium purely on scarcity. Collectors pursuing a complete Showcase set will pay up for top-census examples, but the issue is unlikely to see broad speculative interest absent a character revival.
