Marvel Tales #161 is a 1984 newsstand issue of Marvel's long-running reprint anthology, presenting an early Amazing Spider-Man story originally illustrated by Steve Ditko during the celebrated Lee/Ditko run of the mid-1960s. The featured tale draws on Spider-Man's early supporting cast and rogues gallery, including Aunt May, Betty Brant, reformed newsman Frederick Foswell, the small-time hood Lucky Lobo, and Norman Osborn in his early appearances prior to the public revelation of his double life as the Green Goblin. As with all Marvel Tales issues, the value here lies in the reprinted Ditko artwork and vintage Lee-era plotting rather than any new content.
As a reprint vehicle rather than a source of first appearances or landmark events, Marvel Tales #161 has never carried meaningful collector premium and trades essentially at back-issue commodity levels. Demand is limited to Spider-Man completists assembling full Marvel Tales runs, Ditko-art collectors seeking an affordable way to own his linework, and readers wanting the classic Lee/Ditko story without chasing the pricier original Amazing Spider-Man issue. There is no meaningful secondary market narrative driving the book beyond its role as accessible vintage content.
Collecting interest in this issue is modest and grade-driven mainly at the high end: raw copies in any condition move slowly and cheaply, while a small number of collectors pursue pristine slabbed copies purely for registry or
