This is a reprint title from 1968, well before the direct/newsstand distinction existed, so no variant designation applies. The cover shows notable wear including spine stress lines and what appears to be a small spine roll, edge wear along the right border, a soft/rounded top-left corner, and general surface aging with light soiling. There is a partial vertical crease near the left edge and some minor color rub along the spine; the book is protected in a plastic sleeve which adds glare obscuring fine detail. Marvel Tales (Vol. 2) was Marvel's mid-1960s reprint vehicle, recycling early Amazing Spider-Man adventures for a new wave of readers who had missed the scarce, already-pricey first printings. Issue #12, cover-dated January 1968, falls within the title's run reproducing the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Spider-Man stories from the early Amazing Spider-Man issues, presented with a new cover rather than a facsimile of the original. As a reprint book it carries no first-appearance or origin significance of its own; its interest lies chiefly in offering affordable access to classic Ditko-era Spider-Man storytelling.

Market data reflects that secondary status: certified sales cluster at modest prices even in the highest surviving grades, with 9.6 and 9.4 copies trading in the $180-$190 range and values falling off sharply below 8.0. Demand is driven almost entirely by Silver Age Spider-Man completists building affordable reprint runs and by CGC registry participants chasing top-census slots, rather than by investors or key-issue speculators. The absence of any 9.8 on census, despite a reasonably deep pool of 68 graded copies, suggests either fragile print stock or simply limited submission interest at the summit grade.

This is a book that trades in a narrow, well-behaved band rather than one prone to speculative spikes. Low- and mid-grade raw copies serve budget-minded readers and dealers filling out Marvel Tales runs, changing hands cheaply and steadily. High-grade certified copies appeal to a small pool of registry collectors, and a hypothetical 9.8 would likely command a clear premium over the current 9.6 benchmark simply on rarity grounds, though the overall ceiling for the title remains modest compared to the primary Amazing Spider-Man issues it reprints.
