Marvel Premiere #56, cover dated October 1980, hands the try-out title over to Dominic Fortune, the Depression-era soldier of fortune Howard Chaykin created for the black-and-white magazine Marvel Preview in 1975. "The Big Top Barter Resolution" is plotted by Chaykin with Len Wein and scripted by David Michelinie, with Chaykin supplying layouts and the cover and Terry Austin finishing the interior art and sharing cover credit. The story is set in the spring of 1938 and pairs Fortune with a young Dum Dum Dugan, years before Dugan became a fixture of Nick Fury's S.H.I.E.L.D., in a circus-and-riverboat caper that also features Sabbath Raven. The issue is Fortune's first appearance in a color comic and one of the clearest early statements of the pulp-adventure sensibility Chaykin would develop through Blackhawk and American Flagg.

Market profile is modest and driven almost entirely by creator interest rather than character speculation. Fortune has never carried an ongoing series, and the character's periodic revivals have not produced the kind of media catalyst that moves Bronze Age prices, so the book trades as a mid-run Marvel Premiere issue with a small Chaykin and Austin following attached. Supply is ample: it is a 1980 Marvel printed in quantity, and copies surface regularly in dealer stock and online marketplaces, which caps upside in the raw grades. Certified copies are scarce simply because the economics of grading rarely justify submission, and the thin census means slab pricing is set more by the cost of certification than by competitive bidding.

Buyers are Chaykin completists, Dominic Fortune collectors filling the short list of the character's appearances, and Marvel Premiere run collectors who need the later, less-reprinted issues. Across grades the spread is narrow, so condition sensitivity is low until the very top of the scale, where a high-grade certified copy becomes a registry and completion purchase rather than a value play. The practical advice for the raw market is to buy the best-looking copy available rather than pay a premium for a grade bump, and to treat any certified example as a long-hold niche item.
