JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #82

This pre-1977 Silver Age issue shows notable spine wear with visible white stress lines and a couple of small chips along the spine edge, plus a diagonal crease running through the upper left corner of the cover. There is minor edge wear and a small tear/chip at the top left corner, along with some soiling and color rub particularly along the spine and lower cover. The cover is intact and complete but shows moderate handling wear consistent with a lower-mid grade; interior and back cover were not assessed from this photo.

Journey Into Mystery #82 (Marvel, July 1962) is the foundational issue introducing Thor to the Marvel Universe, scripted by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber with art by Jack Kirby and inks by Joe Sinnott. The issue establishes the origin of Dr. Don Blake, his discovery of the enchanted walking stick in a Norwegian cave, and his transformation into the Asgardian god of thunder to battle the Stone Men from Saturn. Arriving at the tail end of Marvel's 1961-62 superhero relaunch, alongside the debuts of the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, and Spider-Man, the issue marks one of the last major character introductions that completed the publisher's early Silver Age pantheon and set the stage for the Thor series that would run in Journey Into Mystery through issue #125 before the title was renamed.

Demand for the issue is driven almost entirely by its status as a first appearance and origin story for a character who became one of Marvel's flagship properties and a cornerstone of its film franchise. The certified population is sizable for a book of this significance, with well over a hundred CGC Universal copies graded, but supply thins sharply above VF/NM, and the top of the census (9.2 and 9.4) consists of only a couple of copies each with no recorded sales, underscoring how rarely high-grade examples change hands. Pricing across the graded spectrum shows a steep, non-linear climb from the low hundreds in mid-grade to several thousand dollars at 9.0, consistent with a key issue whose value is concentrated at the top of the condition curve rather than spread evenly across it.

The book is a staple target for Silver Age Marvel key collectors and origin-story specialists, and it is frequently pursued alongside other 1962 debuts as a cornerstone of an early-Marvel run. Lower and mid-grade raw copies remain accessible entry points for collectors building a Thor or Silver Age key set, while the handful of surviving high-grade certified copies command outsized premiums reflecting both character importance and genuine census scarcity; any copy graded above the current top of the census would be expected to set a new benchmark given the absence of comparable sales at that level.
