Published with a spring 2001 cover date, Iron Man (Vol. 3) #40 falls in the Frank Tieri stretch of the volume launched out of Heroes Return in 1998. The issue continues the "Remote Control" storyline, pitting Tony Stark against corporate rival Tiberius Stone, with Radioactive Man also in play. Leonardo Manco supplies the cover, while the interiors are unusual for a mid-run issue in that Alitha Martinez's pages are supplemented by guest contributions from Mike Wieringo, Adam Pollina, John Romita Sr., Bob Layton, Eric Shanower, and Keron Grant — a roster that gives the book more art-historical interest than most issues of its vintage. No first appearances or origin material originate here, and the Stone material would not acquire wider recognition until the character resurfaced in later Spider-Man storytelling.

Market behavior matches that of a common late-1990s/early-2000s Marvel direct-market issue. Print runs were ample relative to surviving demand, raw copies circulate freely in dealer back-issue boxes and multi-book eBay lots, and there is no speculative catalyst attached to the issue. Certified examples are scarce simply because the economics of grading rarely justify submission, so the certified tier trades on registry and set-completion motives rather than on scarcity of the underlying book. The presence of an Iron Man title and a Romita Sr. credit generates occasional incidental interest, but neither factor has produced a measurable premium in recorded sales.

Buyers are principally run collectors filling the 1998-2004 volume, Tieri and Martinez completists, and set-builders who prefer high-grade unpressed copies. Across the raw grade spectrum the spread is compressed — condition matters far less here than it does for keys, and even well-read copies move at modest levels once shipping is factored. The realistic upside sits entirely in top-certified territory, where thin population and occasional competitive bidding can produce results well above raw levels; sellers of raw stock generally do better consigning this issue as part of a full run than individually.
