Marvel's licensed Godzilla series (1977-1979) ran only twenty-four issues under a Toho license the publisher did not retain, scripted throughout by Doug Moench with pencils largely by Herb Trimpe. Issue #21 falls within a story arc that folds Jack Kirby's Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy, characters introduced the prior year in their own short-lived title, into the mainstream Marvel Universe via a time-displacement plot, and further crosses the kaiju with the Fantastic Four's Human Torch and Invisible Woman alongside the series' recurring S.H.I.E.L.D. supporting cast of Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones, Jimmy Woo, and Dr. Takiguchi. Because the license lapsed after cancellation, the run has never been collected in trade paperback or otherwise reprinted in its original Marvel continuity form, giving the whole series an inherent scarcity uncommon for a late-1970s Marvel title.

Demand for the series is driven by two overlapping audiences: Godzilla and kaiju collectors seeking Marvel's sole crack at the character, and Bronze Age Marvel readers completing a run that cannot be replaced with a modern reprint. Issue #21 carries incremental interest beyond a typical mid-run number because of its Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy crossover content, which draws Kirby-character collectors who track guest appearances outside that pair's own title, along with the novelty of a direct Fantastic Four intersection. High-grade survivors are uncommon; Bronze Age Marvel paper stock and a modest print run have kept the CGC 9.8 population thin across the entire series, supporting real premiums for top slabs relative to the modest cost of raw copies.

The book's collector base skews toward Godzilla/kaiju specialists and Marvel Bronze Age run-builders rather than mainstream key-issue speculators, so it trades in a narrower, steadier lane than headline first-appearance books. Low-grade raw copies move readily as inexpensive reading copies for run completion, mid-grade raw represents the most commonly offered condition and the standard shelf copy for most collections, and CGC 9.8 examples surface infrequently, trading as scarcity plays for census-chasers and Devil Dinosaur crossover completists rather than as broad-market key issues.
