Fantastic Four #74, cover-dated May 1968, arrived from the creative team of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Joe Sinnott at the height of their collaborative run on the title. The issue continues the storyline begun with the Sandman's infiltration of the Baxter Building and escalates into a confrontation between the team and the Silver Surfer, whose torment following his imprisonment on Earth (established in the earlier Galactus arc) drove much of the emotional weight of this stretch of issues. While the Surfer's first appearance had already occurred in Fantastic Four #48-50, his continued use here as a tragic, powerful figure reinforced the character's popularity enough to earn him a solo title within the year, and this issue is often cited by readers of the run for its dynamic Kirby/Sinnott cover composition.
Market activity for FF #74 reflects a well-collected but non-key Silver Age issue: substantial certified population (over 1,200 census copies) with steady transaction volume across nearly every grade tier. Values rise gradually through the mid grades before climbing sharply at 9.4 and above, a pattern typical of Silver Age Marvel books where high-grade survivors are scarce relative to demand from run collectors and Silver Surfer enthusiasts. The absence of any certified or sold 9.8 copies underscores how thin the top of the census remains, even with a healthy overall population.
This issue trades primarily as a building block for Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer runs rather than as a standalone investment key, so demand is steady but not speculative. Lower and mid-grade raw copies move readily among readers assembling the full Lee/Kirby FF run, while high-grade certified copies attract a smaller pool of grade-focused Silver Age collectors competing for a scarce top tier. Given the lack of any 9.8 on record, a fresh submission at that grade would likely command outsized attention and set a new benchmark for the issue.
