// Condition analysis
This 1965 pre-direct/newsstand-split issue shows notable wear consistent with a mid-grade Silver Age book: heavy corner rounding and blunting at all four corners, a vertical spine crease/split visible near the top edge with associated color break, and general surface wear with light soiling and a diagonal crease running through the upper cover art. There is also a small tear/chip along the top edge and some waviness to the cover stock suggesting minor moisture exposure. The book is in a protective sleeve which creates some glare; interior pages and back cover were not assessed.

Fantastic Four #42 (September 1965) is the middle chapter of the three-part "Battle of the Baxter Building" arc, in which the reconstituted Frightful Four — Medusa, the Wizard, Sandman, and the Trapster — lay siege to the team's headquarters. Written by Stan Lee and penciled by Jack Kirby at the height of their collaborative run, the issue falls squarely within the celebrated stretch of Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four storytelling that defined Marvel's early-to-mid-1960s house style, with inks by Chic Stone rounding out the art team. It is not a first appearance or origin issue, but it is a representative chapter of one of the run's memorable multi-issue battles, featuring the team's most formidable rotating rogues gallery of the period.
Market data shows a typical Silver Age Marvel curve: values stay compressed and modest through the mid-grade range before accelerating sharply above 9.0, with a pronounced spike between 9.2 and 9.4. Demand is driven primarily by Fantastic Four run-completists and Kirby cover-art collectors rather than key-issue speculators, which keeps raw and mid-grade pricing steady but unspectacular. High-grade certified copies see outsized premiums due to genuine scarcity — only a handful of 9.6 and 9.8 copies exist on a census of roughly 500 graded books, making top-end examples considerably harder to source than the mid-grade population would suggest.
This is a book collected mainly as part of assembling a complete run of the Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four rather than pursued as a standalone target. Entry-level and reading copies trade cheaply and are readily available given the deep certified population in the mid grades. Investment interest concentrates at the top of the grade scale, where the scarcity of pristine copies against steady long-term demand for the title supports a meaningful premium over the already-elevated 9.4 price point.
