Fantastic Four #40 (July 1965) closes out "The Battle of the Baxter Building," the two-part story begun in issue #39 in which Doctor Doom strips the Fantastic Four of their powers and lays siege to their headquarters. With the team rendered ordinary, Reed Richards outfits them with mechanical battle armor and enlists Daredevil to help even the odds against Doom. Scripted by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, with Vince Colletta inking, the issue is a showcase for Kirby's machinery and cityscape work during one of the title's most fertile creative stretches, arriving just before the FF's cosmic-scale stories of the following year.
The issue is not a first appearance or origin story, and it trades accordingly as a strong mid-run Silver Age Marvel book rather than a headline key. Demand is driven by the Lee-Kirby creative pedigree, the popularity of Doctor Doom as an adversary, and steady collector interest in the Daredevil crossover appearance during his own early publication years. Census data shows a healthy population across mid and high grades with active sales activity at nearly every grade point, indicating a well-tracked, frequently traded book rather than a scarce one.
The book suits collectors building a complete Lee-Kirby Fantastic Four run or a Doctor Doom-focused collection rather than speculators chasing a single grail. Lower and mid grades move in a modest, stable price band reflecting ready raw-copy supply, while pressure increases sharply above 9.0 as census population thins; the complete absence of any 9.8 on the Universal census marks the top of the grade curve as effectively unclaimed territory, and a copy surfacing at that level would likely draw premium bidding from high-grade Silver Age specialists rather than trade at a routine market price.
