// Archive commentary
Fantastic Four #313, cover-dated April 1988, arrived during Steve Englehart's run on the title, a period that followed John Byrne's celebrated tenure and worked to keep the team's core lineup and street-level Manhattan adventures moving forward for a new generation of readers. The issue is a standard entry in the ongoing series rather than a storyline milestone, featuring the classic quartet of Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing without introducing a new villain, character, or plot device that has since become a fixture of Marvel continuity.
Market data for this issue reflects its status as a plentiful, unremarkable Copper Age comic: sales activity is thin across most of the certified census, with meaningful FMV data appearing only near the top of the grading scale. The jump from $16 at 9.4 to $70 at 9.8 is consistent with a book that trades for pocket change in raw form but sees real collector competition only for pristine, top-census slabs, a pattern typical of late-1980s direct-market Marvel titles that were heavily preserved by speculators at the time of release.
This is a book bought primarily by Fantastic Four run-collectors filling out long boxes or by grade-chasers targeting a 9.8 census slot rather than by key-issue investors. Raw copies in low and mid grade are inexpensive and plentiful, reflecting original high print runs and minimal ongoing demand, while a true 9.8 commands a real premium given the modest but persistent population reports and limited high-end supply.
