Fantastic Four #286 (January 1985) arrived during John Byrne's celebrated stewardship of the title, a run widely credited with revitalizing the Fantastic Four after a decade of uneven output. By this point in the series, She-Hulk had taken the Thing's seat on the roster, giving Byrne fresh dynamics to explore between Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Jennifer Walters. Byrne handled writing, penciling, and cover art on the issue, consistent with his hands-on approach throughout the era, and the book reflects the polished, character-driven storytelling that made his tenure a benchmark for the title even without a first appearance or landmark event driving the issue.
Market data shows a large certified population, with over 700 CGC Universal copies recorded, and pricing that stays essentially flat through the mid and low grades before rising sharply only at the top of the census. Sales activity clusters heavily around 9.8, where the FMV sits near $70 on the strength of well over a hundred recorded transactions, while grades from 7.5 through 9.0 have hovered in the low twenties for years with little differentiation between them. This pattern is typical of a well-preserved 1980s direct-market comic: ample raw supply kept prices compressed across the bulk of the grading spectrum, with real premiums reserved for pristine, investment-grade slabs.
This is a book for run-builders and Byrne-era completists rather than speculators chasing a key. Raw copies in worn condition move for a few dollars at most, reflecting cover-price-level demand rather than scarcity, and mid-grade raw copies remain inexpensive and easy to source given the depth of the surviving population. The real collector activity concentrates at the CGC 9.8 tier, where census-topping copies command a meaningful premium over anything graded below it, making this issue primarily a candidate for census-chasing rather than broad-based key-issue investment.
