Fantastic Four #215 arrived in February 1980 during John Byrne's formative run as penciler on the title, inked here by Joe Sinnott, with a script and plot handled under Marvel's Bronze Age house style and editorial oversight from Jim Shooter and Mark Gruenwald. The issue pits the team against the cosmic brawler Blastaar, with Captain America and the Vision making guest appearances alongside Franklin Richards and H.E.R.B.I.E., rounding out a busy but conventional team-up story typical of the period. No character debuts or landmark creative firsts occur in this issue; its interest lies chiefly in being a page from Byrne's pre-writer/artist tenure on Fantastic Four, a run widely regarded as one of the title's high points once he assumed full creative control shortly thereafter.
Market data reflects a plentiful, well-preserved population, with 145 Universal census copies and sales concentrated at the high end of the grading scale, where 9.6 and 9.8 copies see steady if modest demand from Byrne-run completists. Prices at 9.6 hover in the mid-$40s to low-$50s range, and 9.8s command a premium in the mid-$70s, both figures consistent with a well-liked but non-key issue riding on artist recognition rather than character-defining content. Lower-grade raw copies see negligible collector attention, trading close to nominal value since the book carries no scarcity or milestone premium to offset condition sensitivity.
This issue suits Byrne-run and Fantastic Four team-run collectors filling out a complete Bronze Age set rather than key-issue investors. High-grade CGC-slabbed copies will continue to see incremental interest tied to the broader appreciation of Byrne's FF work, while raw copies in low to mid grade remain readily available and inexpensive, best suited for reading copies or run-fillers rather than speculative holds.
