Fantastic Four #101 arrived in August 1970 at a pivotal moment for Marvel's flagship team book. Jack Kirby, the co-creator and defining artist of the series since its 1961 debut, was in the process of departing Marvel for DC, and this issue represents one of the last handled under his direct plotting before the transition to new creative hands. Pencils for #101 were provided by John Buscema, filling in as Kirby wound down his regular duties, making the issue a notable marker in the handoff between two of the era's most important Marvel artists. There is no first appearance, death, or origin story attached to this issue; its importance is rooted in creative history and timing rather than character introduction.
Market data reflects a high-population Bronze Age book: 232 universal copies are recorded across the census, with the bulk of sales activity concentrated in the mid-to-high grades (9.2 through 9.6). Pricing is flat through the low and mid grades, with copies from 4.0 to 6.0 clustering near $14–20, before climbing meaningfully at 9.2 and above. The steepest value increases occur near the top of the census, where certified 9.6 copies have traded near $220 and higher grades become scarce relative to the overall population, consistent with a common title that is nonetheless hard to find pristine.
This is a book collected primarily by Fantastic Four and Kirby-era Marvel completists rather than a mainstream key-issue audience, so demand is steady but not speculative. Raw and low-grade copies serve reading and run-filling collectors at modest cost, while mid-grade copies attract those assembling presentable Bronze Age FF sets. Top-census 9.8 examples, though rare, would draw interest chiefly from registry-focused buyers targeting condition census pieces rather than from collectors chasing character or story significance.
