Darkhawk #42 arrives near the end of the title's four-year run, with Danny Fingeroth still scripting the character he co-created in 1991 and Tod Smith and Ian Akin handling the art. The issue introduces the Shaper, sculptor Barton Ford, a murderer who gains the ability to remold matter after an encounter with an unidentified alien metal and builds himself armor to hunt Darkhawk; the story continues into the following issues and folds in Portal and the Powell family subplots that carried the book's later arcs. It sits in the stretch of the series set largely around Null Space, after the Venom crossover issues of 1993-94 had drawn the title's widest readership, and the Shaper never became more than a Darkhawk-specific antagonist in later continuity.

Market profile is that of a mid-1990s Marvel secondary title in its final year: print runs had contracted from the speculation peak, but distribution was still broad enough that unread direct-edition copies remain easy to source. Demand for the series concentrates almost entirely on the first issue and the Venom-cover issues, and the census reflects that, with certification of the late run rare enough that no meaningful sales trail exists for this number. Where interest does surface, it comes from the Darkhawk run collectors who resurfaced around the character's 2018-2021 revival and MCU-adjacent chatter, and from first-appearance completists tracking the Shaper credit.

Buyers are run builders finishing a #1-50 set, Fingeroth or Tod Smith collectors, and the occasional bidder chasing a high-grade example of a book almost nobody bothered to slab. Across the lower brackets this trades as a common back-issue at bin or near-bin levels, with condition mattering less than availability of a clean copy. At the top of the scale the value is a function of certification scarcity rather than of the issue itself, so realized prices are volatile and thin; sellers should expect a slow market and buyers should not read a strong single result as an established level.
