Conan #1 (2004) marked Dark Horse Comics' acquisition of the Conan the Barbarian license and the character's return to ongoing comics after a long absence from new material. Writer Kurt Busiek and artist Cary Nord were tapped to reintroduce Robert E. Howard's sword-and-sorcery hero to a new generation, adapting early Howard source material rather than continuing prior Marvel continuity. The issue was well received on release for Nord's painterly, moody artwork and Busiek's faithfulness to Howard's prose tone, and it is generally credited with restoring critical and commercial momentum to the Conan comics franchise.

As a 2004 direct-market comic, Conan #1 was printed and distributed in significant quantity, and raw copies remain widely available at nominal cost even today. Nearly all measurable market value is concentrated in top-census CGC 9.8 slabs, where a deep pool of graded copies (73 on census against 107 total submissions) still supports modest but consistent sales activity. There is no meaningful secondary market for mid- or low-grade raw copies, which trade closer to cover price than to any collectible premium.

Demand for this book comes primarily from Conan and sword-and-sorcery completists, Busiek and Nord fans, and collectors assembling a full run of the Dark Horse Conan relaunch rather than speculators chasing a first appearance or landmark event. Given the abundant supply, this is a book best acquired and sold in pristine 9.8 slabbed form; raw copies hold little more than reading-copy value and are unlikely to appreciate meaningfully regardless of condition.
