Challengers of the Unknown #44 arrived in July 1965 as part of DC's long-running series built on Jack Kirby's original 1957 concept: four ordinary men — pilot Ace Morgan, strongman Rocky Davis, acrobat Red Ryan, and scientist Professor Haley — who each cheated death and dedicated their lives to facing the unknown. By this point in the run the book had settled into a formula of pulp-inflected science fiction and monster-adventure plots typical of the era's team books, without Kirby's continued involvement. The issue is a representative mid-run entry rather than a storyline of lasting significance, with no first appearances, origin retelling, or landmark creative statement attached to it.
