Captain America volume three reached its forty-seventh issue — carried on the cover with Marvel's restored legacy numbering as issue 514 — in November 2001, deep into Dan Jurgens's run as both writer and artist. The issue is the third chapter of the four-part "America Lost," pitting Captain America against the Red Skull and the Hate-Monger with Avengers support, and it sits two issues from the end of the Heroes Return relaunch before the title was handed to Marvel Knights and rebooted under John Ney Rieber and John Cassaday. Its most durable point of interest is contextual rather than narrative: the book shipped in the late summer and early fall of 2001, and the Jurgens finale that followed became the last chapter of a version of the character that the following year's relaunch deliberately left behind.

Commercially this is a late-run modern issue from a period of soft newsstand and direct-market distribution, printed in quantities that far exceed present demand. Copies surface constantly in dealer stock, convention boxes and run lots, and the Jurgens issues as a group are typically priced and sold as a block rather than individually. There is no first appearance, death or origin to anchor speculative interest, and the certified market reflects that: submissions have been minimal, and the handful of high-grade slabs that appear trade on the strength of the holder rather than the issue, with no observable premium for the Red Skull content or the legacy-numbered cover.

Buyers are almost entirely run collectors completing volume three or the Jurgens tenure, plus Red Skull and Hate-Monger completists tracking villain appearances. Across grades the spread is compressed to the point of being nearly flat — a well-worn copy and a sharp unslabbed near-mint copy differ by only a couple of dollars, and the practical decision for a seller is whether to move the book in a lot or hold it as run filler. Certification is difficult to justify economically unless the copy is being added to an existing registry set; for the archive, the sensible handling is as a clean mid-run title book that helps complete a set rather than as a standalone offering.
