Batman #166 arrived in September 1964, squarely within the celebrated "New Look" relaunch that editor Julius Schwartz initiated a few issues earlier with the redesigned yellow-oval bat-emblem and a leaner, more detective-focused Batman. Interior art in this stretch of the series was handled primarily by Sheldon Moldoff (credited as Bob Kane per the studio arrangement of the era) and inkers working in the streamlined house style Carmine Infantino established for the character's visual overhaul. The issue is a representative example of DC's effort to modernize Batman after years of increasingly fantastical science-fiction plots, returning the character toward crime-focused adventure alongside Robin.,
Market data shows a typically steep Silver Age grade curve: raw copies in the 4.0–6.0 range trade in the $44–$80 band, with values climbing sharply above 8.0 as the population of high-grade survivors thins substantially. Demand is driven largely by Batman completists and New Look-era specialists rather than any single first appearance, since the issue is not associated with a major character or villain debut; its interest is contextual and connected to the broader Schwartz-Infantino relaunch rather than a standalone key moment.,
This book suits collectors building a full New Look Batman run or a Silver Age DC representative set rather than those chasing a marquee key. Raw copies below very fine remain inexpensive and plentiful, mid-grade copies are readily available in the $50–$100 range, and only the handful of copies graded 9.2 and above command real premiums, with the sole certified 9.8 representing a genuine rarity outlier likely to draw strong bidding whenever it next appears at auction.
