Balder the Brave #4 closes the four-issue limited series that Walt Simonson spun out of his celebrated Thor run, with Simonson scripting and supplying the cover and Sal Buscema handling both pencils and inks, over John Workman lettering and Paul Becton colors. The finale resolves Balder's campaign against the Frost Giants and his entanglement with Karnilla, Queen of the Norns, sending him back toward Asgard and the leadership role Simonson had been building toward in the parent title. As a companion piece to one of the most respected Marvel runs of the 1980s, the series has documentary value for readers tracking how Simonson restructured Asgard, but it contains no first appearance, origin, or death that collectors treat as a key.

Market activity in this title is driven almost entirely by set buyers rather than single-issue demand. Complete #1-4 runs are the standard unit of sale on eBay and dealer sites, and they clear at modest sums even in high-grade newsstand form, which caps what any individual issue can command. Certified activity is minimal: the census is thin and certified sales are sporadic, so a top-grade slab is priced largely off the cost of submission plus a small premium rather than off a competitive bidding record. Issue #1 absorbs what little speculative interest exists in the series, both as the first solo Balder title and as the issue with a recognized dollar price variant, leaving the concluding chapter as the softest of the four.

The buyer pool is Simonson completists, Thor and Asgard run collectors, and dealers filling set orders. Low-grade copies function as reading material and trade at bulk-bin levels; mid-grade copies gain little over that, since the print run and 1986 vintage mean well-preserved examples remain easy to source. The only meaningful spread appears at the top of the scale, where certification adds cost-driven value rather than scarcity value, and submitting a copy for grading is difficult to justify economically. Interest is most likely to move with renewed attention to Balder in adaptation or with a broader revaluation of Simonson-era Thor material, which would lift the first issue well before it reached this one.
