Cover-dated April 1990, Avengers West Coast #57 closes out John Byrne's tenure as writer and penciler on the series he had reshaped since West Coast Avengers #42, inked here by Paul Ryan and colored by Bob Sharen. The issue is the second half of the confrontation that follows Wanda Maximoff's turn: with Magneto and Quicksilver at her side, she faces a depleted roster of Wonder Man, U.S. Agent, Iron Man, the Wasp, Dr. Pym and the deactivated original Human Torch, with Agatha Harkness figuring in the fallout. It sits inside the broader Byrne arc that ran from the dismantling of the Vision through the revelation that Wanda's twins were never real, material later mined heavily by adaptations and collected as the Darker than Scarlet volume. Byrne left before resolving the storyline, which gives this issue an unusual status as both a climax and an abrupt stopping point.

Market interest in this stretch of the run is derivative rather than independent: demand flows from the Vision and Scarlet Witch story cycle, and the money concentrates on West Coast Avengers #45 and Avengers West Coast #56, the issues collectors have tagged as first-appearance and first-cover books. Number 57 is the follow-on chapter, and it trades accordingly – readily available raw, thinly represented on the CGC census, and priced at a clear discount to its immediate predecessor. The 2021 streaming-driven run-up lifted the whole title briefly, and the retreat since then has been steep enough that current levels reflect ordinary Copper Age supply more than any speculative premium. Print runs from 1990 were large, high-grade survivors are common, and the direct-market edition is the default copy in circulation, with newsstand examples the scarcer of the two.

Buyers are chiefly Byrne completists, Scarlet Witch and Vision character collectors, and readers assembling the full arc issue by issue; there is little crossover speculation. In low and mid grades the book functions as inexpensive run filler and moves best in multi-issue lots rather than as a single listing, where shipping costs dominate the transaction. Certification only makes economic sense at the top of the grade scale, and even there the spread over a clean raw copy is modest by Copper Age standards, so submissions are best reserved for genuinely pristine examples or for slabs acquired below grading cost. Upside is tied to renewed screen attention on the Wanda material; absent that, this is a steady, liquid, low-ticket book.
